melbourne school of fine woodworking (msfw) is a not for profit woodworking club located at Box Hill in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

We provide ongoing daytime and evening tutor groups, specialist workshops and project based courses in fine furniture making for beginners through to experienced woodworkers.

Professional designers and furniture makers teach students in small classes with an emphasis on using hand tools and techniques. Our facilities include a workshop equipped with workbenches and hand tools for each student and a separate machine room.

We welcome applications from anyone wishing to broaden their skills and design and make furniture for their own enjoyment in a supportive environment. Previous woodworking skills are not necessary, but success in fine furniture making does require patience and attention to detail.

We have spots available in our 1st November 2015 -

Router Technique Course – $215

Do you already own a router, but feel that you’re not able to realise its full potential? Do you lack confidence in the use of your router? Are you considering buying a router?

Join Gray Balmer for this one day course for beginners. The msfw router workshops are designed for students interested in learning about one of a woodworker’s most versatile tools and using it to its full potential.  This one day Router Technique workshop has been developed to help you choose a suitable router.  Through discussion, demonstration and practical guidance, students will be taken through the principals of using a router.

Topics at this popular hands-on course include safe use of the router, choosing a suitable machine, router bit types and their selection, use of a router table, and design and construction of router jigs and templates.

Please bring your router if you have one.
