Box Making

In this two-day box making class, students will construct a beautiful Tasmanian Blackwood Candle-Box with a raised-panel sliding lid and African Ebony pull.

Students will choose between half-blind dovetails (advanced) or single through-dovetail with tapered wooden pins (simpler) for corner joinery; depending on their level of skills/experience/ambition. It is advised that if one has not cut dovetails before they choose the latter, as they will still learn similar skills but with more margin for error and time to execute the work.

Students will use various hand tools, including joinery saws, chisels, various hand planes and marking tools in completing this project. The course will focus on hand-tools with minimal power tool use.

Timber stock will be supplied pre-milled and dimensioned so that students can concentrate on mastering the hand tool skills required for this project.

Guidance and tuition will be provided throughout and tailored to the experience level and specific interest of each participant.

Student will leave with a box that they have made by hand!

Each completed box measures approximately 140mm x 130mm x 270mm in size. Each box is finished in a hand-rubbed beeswax and carnauba polish finish.

Note that the highly figured veneered lid show on the half-blind dovetail box is not standard. Project boxes will use beautiful straight grain Blackwood, however if you would like a figured blackwood veneered lid, one can be provided for a $50- additional cost to cover the cost of this timber and preparatory work required.
